Rome/Geneva [ENA] The 66th round of the Geneva International Discussions (GID) took place from 18-19 March 2026 at the United Nations Palais des Nations. This round adhered to the six-point agreement of 12 August 2008 and the implementing measures of 8 September 2008. Despite ongoing differences, the discussions were substantive and open. This negotiating table, established following the 2008 ceasefire agreement between Russia and

Georgia, remains the only platform for dialogue involving all parties to the conflict, together with the UN, EU and OSCE. Participants emphasised the GID’s continued importance as a unique platform for crucial exchanges on conflict-related matters. They reiterated their commitment to a peaceful resolution of all outstanding issues and highlighted the GID’s significant role in fostering stability and security. The Co-Chairs urged progress on all core agenda items and maintained focus on conflict-affected populations. In Working Group I, participants reviewed the security situation since the 65th round in November 2025. They continued their discussions, particularly focusing on the agenda item “Non-Use of Force and International Security

Arrangements”. Working Group II addressed humanitarian issues, including crossings, documentation, livelihoods, missing persons, education and health. They also discussed freedom of movement and external mobility. However, the agenda item “returns” of internally displaced persons and refugees couldn’t be discussed due to a walkout by some participants. The Co-Chairs reiterated their call for participants to address all agenda items without preconditions. Participants agreed to convene the next round in June 2026 in Geneva.
